WASH and Infrastructure Challenges in Atwima Mponua Schools, Ashanti Region - Ghana
In line with IDECO’s commitment to improving Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in schools, a stakeholder engagement was held at the Atwima Mponua District Education Office, Nyinahin. Key District Education Officials, including the Human Resource Director, Personnel Officer, and School Improvement Support Officer (SISO) of Wansambire Circuit, met to support a mission assessing WASH and infrastructure challenges in government basic schools which included Awisesu D/A Basic School, Tenewohoye D/A Primary School and Nkrankrom D/A Primary School.
Field visits to underserved communities revealed dire conditions that impede learning: many classrooms have no roofs or broken walls; some have no desks, exposing students to rain and sunlight. Toilets are often nonexistent, forcing children to seek sanitation in the open. Schools lack essential materials such as books, chairs, and teaching aids, while teacher shortages leave classrooms overcrowded. Access to clean water, handwashing stations, and proper hygiene infrastructure is extremely limited, with no menstrual hygiene support for adolescent girls. These conditions compromise student health, safety, and learning outcomes.
Building on this engagement, IDECO conducted in-depth interviews with students and teachers at Awisesu D/A Basic School, Tenewohoye D/A Primary School, and Nkrankrom D/A Primary School to capture real-time challenges in WASH access, hygiene practices, and menstrual hygiene management. The insights gathered will inform evidence-based interventions tailored to the needs of learners and educators.
The District Education Office expressed full support for collaboration with IDECO to create safe, healthy, and dignified learning environments.
These efforts aim to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (3, 4, and 6) and foster healthier, safer, and more inclusive learning environments for students in Atwima Mponua District.
IDECO now seeks the support of donors and development partners to implement sustainable solutions, including mechanized boreholes, gender-friendly latrines, basic infrastructure, improved handwashing facilities, and menstrual hygiene education.
