Supporting Women-led Artisanal Palm Oil Production in Cape Coast

Enhancing Sustainable Health and Environmental Practices: Supporting Women-Led Artisanal Palm Oil Production in Cape Coast

IDECO, in collaboration with the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Environmental Protection Agency, community leaders, disabled, civil society organizations, Women and Youth groups carried out a needs assessment in Cape Coast, Central Region of Ghana. The assessment focused on enhancing sustainable health and environmental practices through energy efficiency and waste management initiatives for artisanal palm oil millers and producers, the majority of whom are women.

During the assessment, it became evident that these Small-scale producers in palm oil mills face challenges like outdated processing methods, hazardous working conditions, and inefficient waste disposal. Many women-owned palm oil mills still rely on the traditional methods which limit productivity and pose health risks due to the improper disposal of waste which contributes to environmental pollution. The assessment highlights the need for modern but locally made, energy-efficient equipment and sustainable waste management solutions to enhance productivity, improve health, and improve environmental conditions.

The project aims to contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by introducing modern processing technology, promoting sustainable practices, and reducing environmental pollution. It aligns with SDG 1 (No Poverty) by increasing income for women-led enterprises, supporting SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by minimizing hazardous conditions and improving worker health. It also supports SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by empowering female entrepreneurs with better tools and resources. The project also introduces renewable energy solutions, such as biogas from palm oil waste, supporting SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and reducing reliance on harmful energy sources. It also aligns with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by creating new job opportunities and fostering local economic development. It also contributes to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by introducing recycling and waste management systems. The initiative also plays a key role in addressing SDG 13 (Climate Action) by protecting ecosystems and mitigating climate change effects.

With proper funding and support, this project has the potential to transform artisanal palm oil production in the Central Region, ensuring more sustainable livelihoods while addressing critical environmental and health concerns. IDECO calls on donors, organizations, and individuals to support this vital initiative. Contributions will help provide modern processing equipment, sustainable waste management solutions, and training programs that will enable women millers to improve their productivity, protect their health, and safeguard their environment.

IDECO's initiative aims to empower women, promote sustainable practices, and foster economic growth while protecting the planet. It encourages collective action and strategic investment, ensuring women-led businesses thrive and healthier communities’ benefit.
