Stakeholder Engagement & Needs Assessment – Sene West District, Bono East Region, -Ghana
The International Development and Community Organization (IDECO) conducted a thorough stakeholder engagement and needs assessment in the Sene West District of Ghana, focusing on urgent Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) needs and severe deficiencies in school infrastructure.
Through consultations with the District Education Directorate, school authorities, and community leaders, coupled with on-site inspections at three schools including:
Dada Banyarko D/A Primary and Junior High School
Kyeamekrom SDA Primary and Junior High School
Lassi SDA Primary and Junior High School
IDECO uncovered deeply concerning realities. All the three schools had 3/4 dilapidated building, with missing roofs and broken walls, forcing lessons to be held under trees or in unsafe, makeshift structures. Most desks and furniture are damaged or inadequate, and in most cases, students sit on the floor.
These hazardous conditions present a grave risk to the lives of schoolchildren. At Dada banyarko, two children were fatally bitten by snakes while studying under trees that serve as makeshift classrooms, and another was bitten in the bush while trekking to fetch water from a stream. At Lassi SDA Primary, three students tragically lost their lives when unsafe school structures collapsed. In another devastating incident near Kyeamekrom SDA Primary, a child was killed by a crocodile while attempting to collect contaminated water from a nearby dam.
Beyond these tragedies, the absence of safe drinking water, functional sanitation facilities, and proper handwashing stations has far-reaching consequences. It accelerates the spread of waterborne diseases, weakens students’ overall health, and disrupts their ability to learn effectively. Frequent illness, combined with unsafe and inaccessible learning environments, leads to high absenteeism and, in some cases, permanent school dropouts—deepening the cycle of poverty and limiting future opportunities for these children.
The assessment confirmed urgent priorities:
Safe and reliable water supply through mechanized boreholes.
Functional sanitation and hygiene facilities for schools.
Hygiene education to promote healthy practices among students.
Rehabilitation and construction of safe, durable classrooms to protect children and provide a conducive learning environment.
These interventions are essential to improving educational outcomes, reducing preventable diseases, and protecting the dignity and safety of school children. Addressing these needs will directly contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 4 (Quality Education), and Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
IDECO is calling on donors, development partners, government agencies, and civil society organizations to join hands in transforming these schools into safe, healthy, and inspiring spaces for learning. By acting now, we can ensure that every child in Sene West District enjoys their right to education in a safe and supportive environment.
