Providing Clean and Safe Water to Transform Lives in Tetrem Village, Afigya Kwabre North District in Ashanti Region of Ghana.
The Tetrem Pilot Water Project was initiated by International Development and Community Organization (IDECO) with funding from Protectol Water Initiative (PWI) to address the pressing water challenges faced by the community. The process began on 23rd June, 2025 with a comprehensive need’s assessment, during which key stakeholders were engaged to discuss and identify the exact nature of the water problem.
Following this, mobilization was undertaken, including the procurement of necessary materials for the project. On 22nd July, 2025, a sod-cutting ceremony marked the official commencement of excavation. However, during the early days of digging, workers encountered a rocky plate beneath the ground, forcing a change of location. The second site also revealed rocky layers, prompting the search for a suitable spot nearby.
A new location within the same area was finally identified, which allowed for the successful digging of a 37-meter-deep well. By 1st August, 2025, 12 culverts were installed inside the well to ensure stability and safety. Additional works including block laying, well covering, and plastering were carried out to meet the project’s timeline.
To ensure sustainable management, a Water Management Committee was established on 6th August, 2025. Finally, on 8th August, 2025, the well was formally inaugurated and handed over to the Tetrem community, marking the completion of a project that not only delivered clean water but also strengthened community participation and ownership.
The Tetrem Pilot Water Project was initiated to address the pressing water challenges faced by the community and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)
This intervention not only ensures access to safe and clean water but also significantly reduces the daily burden on women and children, who previously traveled long distances to fetch water for household needs. By providing clean water closer to home, the project improves health, saves time, and creates opportunities for education and livelihoods making a lasting impact on community well-being
