Safe Water for All: IDECO Strengthens Resilience in Asonomaso Community in the Ashanti Region of Ghana

Clean and safe water accessibility remains a pressing challenge in many rural communities across the Ashanti Region of Ghana. In response, International Development and Community Organization (IDECO) successfully implemented the Asonomaso Hand-Dug Well Water Project in the Kwabre East Municipal, bringing a reliable and sustainable water source to the people of Asonomaso.

The project commenced on 1st November 2025 with a stakeholder engagement meeting, followed by site selection and a sod-cutting ceremony to officially launch the initiative. This phase brought together community leaders, local authorities, government representatives and residents to ensure that the project was community-driven and responsive to local needs. The participatory process helped identify the most appropriate site for the well.

On 6th December 2025, a WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) awareness programme was organized to educate community members on safe water use, hygiene practices, and environmental sanitation. During this engagement, a Water Management Committee was also established and trained to take responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the facility, ensuring its long-term sustainability.

The project was successfully completed upon various challenges and handed over to the community on 14th February 2026. The handover ceremony marked a significant milestone, highlighting the collective effort between IDECO and partner Protectol Water Initiative (PWI) and the community in improving access to potable water.

This intervention is expected to significantly enhance public health, reduce the time spent fetching water, and improve the overall well-being of residents in Asonomaso and surrounding areas in the Ashanti Region.

IDECO remains committed to implementing impactful, community-centered projects that promote sustainable development across Ghana.
