IDECO Calls for Urgent Support to Provide Safe Water in Santan community, Old Tafo municipality -Kumasi Ghana

IDECO has conducted a critical needs assessment in Santan, revealing the community’s urgent need for a safe and reliable water source. For years, residents have depended on a deteriorating open well, which is severely contaminated due to cracked walls and a lack of protective cover. This unsafe water has led to a rise in waterborne diseases like diarrhea, dysentery, and typhoid, especially among children. Mothers live in constant fear for their children’s health, while medical costs place a heavy financial burden on already struggling families.

The situation worsens during the dry season when the well’s water levels drop drastically, making it nearly impossible to meet the community’s basic needs for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. The open well also poses physical dangers, especially to children, who risk accidents and near-drownings when playing nearby. This daily struggle not only impacts health but also disrupts education, economic productivity, and social harmony.

In response to these dire conditions, IDECO is calling on donors and partners to support the implementation of a sustainable water project in Santan. This project will provide the community with safe, clean water—reducing waterborne diseases, improving hygiene, and easing the burden on women and children. Access to clean water will also improve food security, enhance education outcomes, and promote gender equality by relieving women and girls from the daily task of fetching unsafe water.

IDECO believes that access to clean water is a fundamental human right and remains committed to ensuring a healthier, safer future for the people of Santan. With the generous support of donors, this project can transform lives, restore dignity, and bring hope to an entire community.

Together, we can make clean water a reality for the Santan Community. IDECO pleads with donors to help us with this life-changing mission.
